Unit 38 – Soundtrack Production for the Moving Image

Outline

As you have discovered in recent sessions, music selection is crucial to establishing tone and supplying meaning to visual sequences. This assignment will measure your understanding and creativity in this area by asking you to supply/create appropriate music for a diverse selection of video clips.

Brief.

In groups of 4 or 5 you will be given 3 short video clips that you will supply the music for. These break down into the following:

  1. The opening sequence to ‘Saving Private Ryan’.  For this you are to supply two existing pieces of music for the director to use in this scene. These must be in keeping with mood and style of the film. In addition you will produce a 250 word supporting document, outlining why you think the music is appropriate, and what it adds to the sequence.

  2. Wildlife clip. Create an original piece of music for the sequence using Garageband.

  3. The opening sequence of a children’s TV show. – Create a new theme tune for this program.

  4. Keep a detailed log of your individual contribution to the assignment in the form of production diaries on a WordPress Blog. THIS IS IMPORTANT.

Tasks

LO1: In production groups you will formulate ideas and plans for the replacement soundtrack. You will individually write 250 words justifying the music selection.

LO2: Editing, recording and mixing soundtrack during production and post-production will be a shared responsibility within your groups.

LO4: The finished soundtrack must be synced and matched back to the original video and then exported as a movie file.

Grading Criteria.

To achieve a pass grade the evidence must show that the learner is able to:

  1. Describe the relationships between components of sound and picture with some appropriate use of subject terminology.

  2. Produce recorded audio material for moving image with some assistance

  3. Apply audio recording and editing techniques to produce a soundtrack for a moving image project with some assistance.

To achieve a merit grade the evidence must show that in addition to the pass criteria the learner is able to:

  1. Explain the relationships between components of sound and picture with reference to detailed illustrative examples and with generally correct use of subject terminology.

  2. Produce audio recordings for moving image film to a good technical standard with only occasional assistance.

  3. Apply audio recording and editing techniques to produce a soundtrack for a moving image project to a good technical standard with only occasional assistance.

To achieve a distinction grade the evidence must show that in addition to the pass and merit criteria the learner is able to:

  1. Comprehensively explain the relationships between components of sound and picture with reference to elucidated examples and consistently using subject terminology correctly.

  2. Produce audio recordings for moving image to a technical quality which reflects near professional standards and working independently to professional expectations.

  3. Apply audio recording and editing techniques to produce a soundtrack for a moving image project to a technical quality which reflects near professional standards and working independently to professional expectations.
